John 13:35 says “All people will know that you are my followers if you love each other.”
The devotion today comes from the “Inspirational Study Bible”. Max Lucado suggests we watch a small child follow a parent through the snow. The child stretches to step where the parent stepped. Not an easy task. The child’s legs stretch as far as they can so their feet can fall in the parent’s footsteps. The parent smiles seeing what the child is doing and starts taking shorter steps so the child can follow.
It’s a picture of discipleship.
In our faith we follow in someone’s steps. A parent, teacher, or a hero-none of us are the first to walk the trail. All of us have someone to follow. In our faith we leave footprints to guide others. A child, a friend, a recent convert, even a stranger. None should be left to walk the trail alone.
It’s the principle of discipleship.
We are challenged to invite new seekers and show them our footprints. As you see new folks arriving to St Marks, show them the trail and not just in the sanctuary, practice the spiritual discipline of hospitality and have a cup of coffee with them. It is all about our discipleship and our hospitality which will help us reach our community.
You will see something new in the sanctuary - large TV screens! We will be refining projection of the service on those screens and hope to be pretty well adept at it by Easter. We are in the midst of a technologically oriented culture so our potential new disciples and guests expect us to be able to use technology. Also, you may have noticed the bulletins are more user friendly. This is another way to help visitors navigate our service.
Blessings to you this week. Deacon Nancy Trimble
